I have seen this and a part of me always liked it. I live in FL and there are no birch trees around here.
I have a huge out building full of junk. Every so often I go out there and fill a trash bag and toss it. In one of my cleaning out sessions I uncovered a split birch log. I am guess it is from my grandparents house in Maine or from one of the fall trips my grandma use to take to look at the fall colors.
I took my drill to it. I do not have a drill that would fit a tea light. So I made them pillar candle size. How awesome. It looks perfect on my entryway shelf.
